The Rural Woman’s Guide to Surviving Perimenopause: Practical Tips to Feel Like Yourself Again

Perimenopause Is Tough. Doing It Alone Is Tougher

Hello rural women! Perimenopause can be a time known for unexpected changes, confusing symptoms, and feeling like your body is betraying you.

If you’re a rural or regional woman in your late 30s to 50s and starting to feel “not quite right”, maybe your mood has been swinging, your energy is flat, your sleep is patchy, or you’ve started to forget words mid-sentence. You’re not imagining it.

It could be perimenopause.

Here’s the thing most women aren’t told:

Perimenopause can affect your whole body, not just your periods or hot flushes. Your joints, metabolism, brain, sleep, mood, energy, and even your heart are all impacted.

And rural women often face this transition:

  • Without clear information

  • Without local support

  • While holding together work, family, farming, and community

That’s why I created this gentle, practical guide — because I see you, and I want to help.

Strategy 1: Understand What’s Really Happening in Perimenopause

This stage impacts more than just your periods, it touches every system in your body.

Your hormones don’t just affect your ovaries. They’re connected to your brain, gut, thyroid, bones, heart, and more.

Ignoring what’s happening hormonally can lead to years of feeling “off”, tired, snappy, foggy, and worn out.

Missing this can lead to years of unnecessary suffering and missed opportunities to set yourself up for vibrant health in your later years.

How to Implement

  • Learn about the full range of symptoms: not just hot flushes, but brain fog, poor sleep, anxiety, aches, gut changes, fatigue, and more

  • Read trusted resources from hormone-literate practitioners (like your friendly neighbourhood naturopath!)

  • Know that what’s happening is biological, not personal failure

Strategy 2: Build a Rural-Friendly Support Team

You don’t have to do this alone, not even out bush.

Let’s be honest: in many rural towns, it can be hard to see a GP, let alone someone who understands perimenopause.

But support is available, even if it’s not always in-person.

How to Implement

  • Look for telehealth naturopaths or GPs who work in women’s hormone health

  • Ask if there are upcoming local workshops or online talks (I run these regularly!)

  • Consider joining online communities for women in perimenopause, knowing you’re not alone helps so much

Strategy 3: Make Simple, Proactive Health Investments Daily

Small, consistent actions = better energy, mood, and long-term wellness.

Finding time for your health is essential, especially when hormonal changes are impacting every system in your body. This strategy helps by preventing more serious health issues later and maintaining your quality of life during this transition.

You don’t need a full health overhaul. But small, intentional habits make a huge difference, especially when your hormones are shifting rapidly.

How to Implement

  • Add in protein at every meal to help stabilise blood sugar and energy

  • Try gentle, consistent movement: walking, stretching, dancing, yoga

  • Look into natural remedies that support the nervous system and hormone balance (always with professional guidance)

  • Prioritise rest, even just five extra minutes lying down with your eyes closed can reset your nervous system

Everyday Hormone Helpers (That Fit Rural Life)

Simple actions that fit into rural life, no fancy gym or health food store required

  • Drink more water than you think you need

  • Move your body daily — even if it’s just around the clothesline

  • Connect with other women going through the same thing

  • Reduce your stress load with breathwork, prayer, nature, or stillness

  • Say no more often — boundaries are hormone-friendly

Final Thoughts: You’re Not Falling Apart. You’re Rebalancing.

Perimenopause isn’t a disease. It’s a powerful, natural shift, but one that deserves support, strategy, and kindness.

If you’re feeling burnt out, overwhelmed, or unsure where to start, please don’t go it alone.
